The Frame twisters M/C became an AMA chartered club in 2007, but its roots reach back to the previous year with our initial event, the 2006 ISDE Two-Day Qualifier in Walsenburg CO.
The original event was the idea of and driven by Erik Nijkamp. Being a huge fan of European Enduro racing and the ISDE in particular, Nijkamp was able to secure a spot on the 2006 AMA and RMEC calendar for an event. Nijkamp had secured use of the property in Walsenburg and now the challenge was on to find help. Nijkamp soon recruited a number of friends, and friends of friends to help including the Pikes Peak Enduro Club. Most famous for promoting the Pikes Peak Enduro on the 717/Woodland Park trail system, the club had been inactive since 2001, but agreed to bankroll the event and supply help.
George Pennington had been among those who helped get the initial event off the ground and following the event saw the value in keeping this group of people together to promote future events. Together with Nijkamp, they petitioned the Pikes Peak group to re-activate and commit to regular meetings and a yearly event, sadly, they chose not to move forward with that proposal. What remained though was a core group of 15 or so people who shared the vision to carry on as an organized club and the Frametwisters were born. Although the Pikes Peak group chose not to participate in our 2007 event, they were willing to loan us funds to launch the Frametwisters and execute that event, which was also an AMA Two-Day ISDE Qualifier, now held in Trinidad CO. with the assistance and support of Tony Paradiso, owner of Topar Racing.
Following that event, the Frametwisters repaid the initial loan and were able to retain enough funds from the profits of that event to become self sufficient and bankroll the 2008 event, also at the Trinidad location, but now simply a one day RMEC sanctioned event.
That core group of enthusiasts is still together, still working to provide a quality event each year for the RMEC schedule and grow the club. While the club’s stated mission is to provide an annual event for the RMEC calendar, we are much more than that. Club members share a camaraderie that goes beyond the event, often traveling together to events, or getting together for casual rides or trips. We have a yearly camping trip to the Taylor Park area where we can get on the trails and ride, and tell tall tales around the campfire, as well as an annual Christmas party where we celebrate the previous year with recognition and awards. Through the profits generated by our event, we make annual donations to COHVCO, local non profit organizations, local ISDE riders and many times at meetings we will tackle a land use or other issue by writing letters together as a group, doing our part as a group, to make our voice heard. Our members have many varied motorcycling interests. We have members who participate in the trail advocacy club, CMTRA, we have some who follow the WEBE race series, we have vintage MX’ers and we have an active group of Trials riders among us as well as some guys who just like to enjoy the trails.
You don’t have to be a racer to be member; in fact we have a number of members who don’t race. You just need to have a desire to hang with a like minded group of riders, and a commitment to help at the annual event, at whatever capacity you’re able and capable of. We always welcome guests and prospective new members. We invite you to attend a club meeting, check us out and see if you’d like to become a part of what we do.
